Doing Something Different

Another full year is upon us! I can hardly believe it, but I definitely can't ignore it. As the new year begins I would like to challenge each of you to move beyond "New Years Resolutions." What I mean by that is simply this, we often make resolutions just to wake up the next day to say "I really don't feel like doing that."

If we are going to change we must stop placing so much emphasis on our feelings. Does this sound odd coming from a counselor? maybe so, but I spend a great deal of time talking with individuals about feelings, thoughts, and behavior, and what I have seen may surprise you. In fact, if a person focuses only on feeling, they most often continue to feel that way, but if they begin to challenge their thought processes and make small changes in their behavior, they begin to feel differently.

So in this past year, if you have noticed you've been mindless, make small steps toward mindfulness (ex. paying attention to spouse, friends etc.)

If you have always wanted to do something (sow, scrapbook etc.) join a group (if you need accountability) or slowly begin gathering supplies and spend at least 15 minutes a day on the tasks.

You know what's on your list more than I, so do something different this year and feel great!

Happy New Year!
