Those who know me well, know that I have always had an interest in creative writing and music. In college I put together this poem, to help capture the power of writing and answer a few questions about it.
What is writing, do you know?
Is it a swift stroke of a pen that brightens the paper?
or a permanent marking imprinted on the minds of all its takers?
Is it happiness or gloom?
Does it leave a smile or cause a tear to fall?
Is it meaningful in such a way
as to control what others think or say?
Or is it just a frivolous past time for which some make only a dime while others make millions?
Does it leave its imprint on the world and outlive its author
Yes it does, yes it does...oh writing has power.
Power to heal, to change, and to mold
a new generation to whatever wishes they hold
A flood of ones emotions, inner being, and desires
shared with a world that will continue until it expires.
I still believe that writing has power,in fact, I use a writing technique in practice to help reduce anxiety. You can read more about this technique in the book, Write Your Fears Away, by Dr. David Barnhart. I have also found that lyrics or words in music or poetry can be useful in in helping people remember, find meaning, and process difficult circumstances.
So my challenge to you is this:
1.Make a list of songs you have found meaningful throughout time
2.Listen to a few of them and revisit a past experience you've had with those songs
3. Select a song that represents your current life experience
4. Select a song that represents what you hope to experience in the future
Feel free to comment on your experience.
